If you only do two things on LinkedIn, this is how you want to focus, based on my experience as the #1 LinkedIn All Time Top Female Expert and one of the Top 1% Most View Profiles:
1. Profile
* Optimize your profile like your website. This means use your keywords wherever possible, especially at the top in your headline, in your summary, skills, positions, etc. You want to be at the top of search results when fabulous future opportunities are searching for your keywords.
BONUS TIP: Move your endorsements section as closer to the top to add more visual appeal and break up blocks of text.
* Make your profile easily scannable. Include white space, copy bullets from Word, use short sentences.
* Have a compelling call to action.
2. Groups
* Share your expertise to increase your visibility with those who want to work with you.
* Tap into a global network of experts instantly when you have post a question.
QUESTION: What do you think? What are the two most important areas you focus on to cultivate your effective LinkedIn presence? I’d love to hear in the comments below.

What are your thoughts?
Joan Stewart, The Publicity Hound says
Love your tips, Christine, especially the one about moving Recommendations closer to the top. I didn’t know that was an option. Here are my three tips:
–In the part of your profile where you can list 3 website URLs, I see so many people linking to “My Website” or “My Blog.” When it comes to SEO, those are wasted back links, especially considering the fact that LinkedIn is such a high page rank site. If you’re a time management expert, why not edit “My Website” so it becomes “Time management advice” or “time management tips” or any keyword phrase that will be recognized by the search engines as pointing to your website? My three links say “Publicity and PR tips,” “Publicity and PR blog” and “How to write a press release.”
–Refer to yourself as an expert throughout the profile copy. When I search Google or LinkedIn looking for someone with expertise in a topic, I usually type in “Top 10 SEO experts” or “Affiliate marketing expert” or whatever.
–So many of the headlines fail to communicate value to the reader, or explain what makes that LinkedIn user different from everyone else in that niche. After listening to a free webinar hosted by Nathan Kievman, leader of the group on Advanced LinkedIn Strategies, I edited my headline to read: “#1 Publicity Expert on Google. President, The Publicity Hound. Call me at 262-284-7451 & ask how I can help you.” I’d be curious to hear your thoughts. Can I do better than that?

Thanks for your insights, Joan.
I think your headline is the most important part of your profile and covered that in a previous post.

Christina,
Thank you for the insightful post. I especially liked the tip about including keywords on your profile. Where would you recommend finding key words for a specific field? Should I use words that I commonly see in job postings?
Your advice is very much appreciated.
Best,
Jessie

Hi Jessie,
Thanks for your comment and feedback on my article.
Absolutely use the keywords you see in the descriptions of jobs you want. You are the CEO of the brand of you and your Ideal Client is those who want to hire you.
Does that make sense?
Best,
Christine
