If you’re speaking for the experience, do you really need a speaking contract?
I say you do.
And here’s why…
Why You Need A Speaking Contract
Using a speaking contract every time you speak is good business…especially when you’re starting out.
Think of it this way…you’re blocking preparation time, travel time and speaking time out on your schedule.
Which is great, because you want the experience.
I started out there too.
But what happens when someone’s not committed or invested in you speaking and cancels with short notice?
(This happened to me…once…and then I learned!)
Do you scramble to fill the time or do you look at empty blocks in your calendar where you could have been generating revenue?
Either way, it’s an energy, and possibly a financial, drain.
And I wish I’d known to do this from the beginning.
So when you can’t or don’t want to charge a speaking fee (being able to make an offer is preferable anyway), when you want the experience or they say they don’t have the budget and you want the visibility, do this instead:
* Ask for travel cost reimbursement fee (mileage, parking, tolls, airfare, hotel, meals, out-of-pocket expenses, etc.) that is NON-refundable in the event of cancellation or re-scheduling.
* And until the fee is received the date will be considered available.
You can create a simple speaking contract confirming the what, when, where, how of what you’ll do, what they’ll do and that you’ll make an offer and your travel cost fee.
Their payment will indicate their acceptance of the speaking contract and will make them committed and invested in your successful speaking engagement where you’re sharing your expertise you invested thousands of hours and dollars in acquiring.
After all…we only value what we give value for…it’s human nature.

This is valuable information that I used to use when I practiced law in the Bay area of California. One thing that I used to also do was, upon my discretion, donate back the travel funds and reimbursement once received.
This donating back is often seen as a terrific gesture of good will, and can serve as leverage for either side to use the information regarding the gifting back, where if there had been no contract at all, the opportunity for such benefit would be lost.

Thanks for your comment, Robert, and thanks for sharing your adaptation as an attorney-speaker!
