Want to make sure your LinkedIn profile is optimized so you’re getting the most from LinkedIn?
Here are some things you should make sure to include in your profile to get started.
The Basics
If you want to be found in LinkedIn search by your Ideal Clients, customers and partners, you need to make sure your profile is up to date in these key areas:
1. Your Headline
Your headline is 1 of the 4 most important parts of your LinkedIn profile when it comes to how your profile appears in search results. Think of the main keywords you want to be discovered by and include them in your headline, as well as a compelling call-to-action.
2. Your Profile Address
Customize your LinkedIn profile url so it is just your name and/or keywords so you’re easy to find and link to.
3. Your Summary
Write a strong keyword-rich summary about yourself that includes the transformation or results you offer your audience and an effective call to action to take the next step with you.
BONUS TIP: Your summary also determines where your profile is displayed in search results…so be sure to make the most of your keywords here.
4. Your Contact Info
This is the section where you add your websites, email, Twitter, etc.
BONUS TIP: Select Other when setting up your website links to use custom keyword-rich, benefit-oriented text to describe them, versus letting LinkedIn label them as Company, Blog, Website, etc.
5. Your Skills and Endorsements
If you have a lot of connections on LinkedIn, you have probably seen many endorsements for your skills appearing in that section. If you feel like people are not endorsing you for the right things or you would like to get endorsements for other skills, make sure to add them (and include the skills liberally in your profile!).
See my article on 5 ways to leverage LinkedIn endorsements to learn more.
6. Your Positions
Create keyword-rich and compelling titles and descriptions to optimize your LinkedIn profile to attract the right opportunities.
These are the two other places that will help you rank higher in LinkedIn search for your keywords.
BONUS ADVANCED STRATEGY: Updates
Use updates to consistently position yourself as an expert and increase your visibility. To make it easy, harness the power of social media management tools to automatically update your status on LinkedIn and schedule updates in advance and throughout the day.
How Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile Will Help You Get Better Results
Why are all of the sections on your LinkedIn profile so important?
Think of it as keyword-optimizing your website for search engines – the more keywords you have in your LinkedIn profile about what you offer, the more likely you are to get discovered by your Ideal Clients searching for help and your solution.
Once people have found your profile, seeing things like your latest updates and links position you as an expert and keep you top of mind.
