Do you ever see this error message when you’re accepting a LinkedIn invitation?
This message was sent to an email address that is not associated with your LinkedIn account. You may have another LinkedIn account with this email address.
It sounds ominous, and you probably want to know what it means, right?
No worries though…it just means you need to add the email to your LinkedIn account. I’ll detail for you below exactly what you can do to easily and quickly resolve the situation.
But first, why are you receiving this message at all?
You’re receiving this message because someone wants to connect with you via the email address they have for you…perhaps a previous company, a personal email, etc.
And here’s how to quickly and easily resolve this error message in two steps:
1. In LinkedIn, click Privacy & Settings in the menu under your profile picture in the top right of any screen.
2. Add and confirm your additional email address using the blue link under your profile picture in the upper left. This will keep you from receiving the error message going forward.
BONUS TIP: I recommend adding all your email addresses to make accepting invitations easy going forward and decreasing the risk that you’ll create duplicate accounts (which are time-consuming to get rid of).
As a bit of background, LinkedIn invitations are email address driven, like on FaceBook, and you can associate all your emails with your one account.
For example, I have my ChristineHueber.com domain, yahoo, hotmail, and gmail email addresses all registered with my LinkedIn account that I opened in 2006 . This makes it easy for anyone I’ve known since 1997 to connect and network with me on LinkedIn, where I’m the LinkedIn #1 All Time Top Female Expert.
You may be wondering, why do I need to add my emails to my account?
What if I don’t?
Of course you can add whatever email addresses you like, but just know that if you don’t add them to your account when you receive an invitation AND BEFORE YOU ACCEPT AN INVITATION, you’ll continue to receive these error messages, or could create duplicate accounts which can be very time-consuming to delete later.
And know too that the end result of doing this will be that you’ll be able to more easily grow your network and business using LinkedIn, when you add all your emails that any of your contacts might have.
And now you know exactly what you can do to keep from receiving this error message when you try to accept a LinkedIn invitation.

Dear Christine
Great article. The only problem is that there is no button on my Linked In page – anywhere – titled ‘Privacy and Settings’.

The Privacy and Settings link is in drop down menu in the top right under your picture.
Does that help?
