It can be so easy to get distracted by the newest BSO (Bright Shiny Object) when you’re growing your business…I know it was for me…and it was the biggest mistake I made.
Chasing the latest thing can be exciting.
But if you’re not getting the results you want, it also can be exhausting, frustrating and draining…not to mention leave you with an empty bank account.
Bright Shiny Object Syndrome
For example, when everyone was talking about social media in 2006, I tried FaceBook and then Twitter and had zero results.
But then I thought…”There must be some way to harness social media…I just need to figure it out…”
And I asked myself where my Ideal Clients (other business owners and entrepreneurs who were looking for better marketing results) would be.
LinkedIn was the obvious answer.
So I opened an account.
But it was frustrating and overwhelming to use LinkedIn…it felt so un-user-friendly compared to FaceBook…and intimidating (like when I got my account restricted!).
I didn’t understand how to use it.
I had contacts and a profile, but I wasn’t getting any business from it.
I felt like it was a social media black hole.
How could I convert my contacts to leads?
How could I generate leads from my profile?
How could I generate leads outside my LinkedIn network?
I felt like I was spinning my wheels and chasing yet another Bright Shiny Object…
But as time went on I kept hearing about LinkedIn more and more.
I thought maybe it could be a way to generate leads in a very leveraged way after all…without having to do so much face-to-face, one-on-one marketing…
Again, I just needed to figure out how to effectively get my message and story out to those who wanted what I was offering.
So how exactly did I overcome my Bright Shiny Object mistake, stop floundering and spinning my wheels on LinkedIn?
I devoted myself to learning how to use LinkedIn and invested thousands of dollars on books, eBooks, webinars and teleseminars and thousands of hours reading, listening and watching.
And I took the best of what I found, tested it, fine-tuned it and developed my LinkedIn Marketing Power (LMP) system that generates consistent, quality leads on LinkedIn.
And not just any leads…
I attract my Ideal Clients to me authentically, without being pushy or sales-y.
And not only does it work for me, it works for everyone I’ve taught it to who implements it…who buckles down and does the work.
So for me, chasing the Bright Shiny Object, my biggest mistake growing my business, was fortunately easy to overcome.
When I started focusing exactly on what generated quality leads on LinkedIn…it was then that everything changed for me in growing my business.
And for that to happen I needed to be rigorously disciplined in my focus on only those activities that put money in my bank account today.
You see…when I started with the goal of generating leads for daily cash, everything fell into place for me in my business.
For me, I figured out that it’s speaking, writing my blog, sharing it on social media, and email marketing to generate leads and cultivate client relationships that create daily cash.
I felt empowered to create my own prosperity sharing my gift and it became easier to stay on course to grow my business (and ignore any Bright Shiny Object).
Because of my LMP system, I know exactly when to share, what to share and how to share it to keep me top of mind, visible and position me as an expert and thought leader to my Ideal Clients.
And the activities that do this I am committed to every day.
Ignoring any Bright Shiny Object.
Why?
Because I see the immediate change in my business when my focus shifts to (or from!) these core activities.
And I know that as I’m consistent in my focus on them (again, ignoring any Bright Shiny Object), I will enjoy consistent results, leads, clients and cash flow as well.
For you, know too, that as your business changes, your path will shift…but the disciplined and consistent focus on generating leads and creating daily cash will serve you whether you’re starting out or you have a 7-figure plus business.
As the leader of your company, your job is to produce money…and to do that you need to do to stay in a great space and energy so you can do that consistently.
Because if you’re not producing money, you have a hobby.
And you’re most likely stressed, second-guessing yourself and overwhelmed if your business is your only source of income.
For me, I’ve become very clear that my number one job is to find the people who want what I have and sell it to them as fast as I can…whether it’s in person or online.
And while I’m seen by my audience as a speaker, coach, trainer and consultant; my real job is to make sales and create daily cash.
So I’ve created a business that allows me to make money any time, 24/7…whether it’s on the phone, speaking or on my website.
And I’ve found that it helps me be clear on business…to be clear on what I serve people’s lives with and how I help them and then ask for the next step and the compensation in a matter of fact way, like ordering a cup of coffee.
And that’s how I used a rigorous, disciplined, systematic focus on exactly how I serve others, generating leads and daily cash from social media and LinkedIn to overcome Bright Shiny Object syndrome…the biggest mistake I experienced in growing my business.
