One thing I hear so often is “How can I be more visible on LinkedIn?” Many of you feel invisible there… you aren’t getting profile views and aren’t appearing in search.
Bottom line, no one really seems to know you’re on LinkedIn.
You may want and need to network on LinkedIn, but your lack of knowledge about how do it effectively means you’re not engaging and not connecting, and as a result you aren’t getting leads and clients either.
But how to become more visible on LinkedIn is really no mystery and actually very simple. As with any networking, when you start compelling conversations with others, they will want to get to know you better.
On LinkedIn, as opposed to FaceBook, Twitter, Google+, etc., you are in a professional world with over 313 million members (updated November 2014), and just as in your off-line professional life where you are talking endlessly to new people, you have to do the same thing in this on-line professional world. And to do that, you have know how to use LinkedIn.
Here are 5 ways to increase your visibility on LinkedIn:
1. Complete your PROFILE.
If Linked doesn’t see your profile as complete, you’ll appear lower in searches. This is not good if you want new clients and customers to find you.
Another reason to make sure your profile is complete is because it acts as a mini-website for you and an introduction to who you are. In short, it positions you a credible and legitimate…you are who you say you are.
2. Make your SETTINGS public.
If your profile settings are restricted in any way, you’ll make it all the more difficult for others to find you. For maximum visibility, you want your profile to be easily found on LinkedIn and on Google.
3. Grow your CONTACTS.
Connecting with users relevant to your business goals expands how many people you can message and who see your updates. This means that if your primary network is small, then your ability to engage with other users will be too.
For me, I connect with most everyone who might need my services and products, even if their headline tells me they’re a COO versus a business owner or entrepreneur, for example.
4. Participate in GROUPS (join mine!).
Don’t just join a group…be sure to provide value. Commenting on and starting discussions is a great way to increase your visibility (and drive traffic to your profile and your website).
For example, you can share your weekly blog post in your groups. This helps you position yourself as an expert and thought leader in your field and keeps you top of mind with group members.
5. Post UPDATES.
Strike a balance between promotion and compelling, value-rich content by using your updates to share your expertise.
Your updates can be found on your profile by clicking the down arrow to the right of the blue Send a message button near the top of your profile when someone clicks the View recent activity link.
Your updates will also in show in your contacts’ home feeds. This means your posts help your contacts and potential clients get to know, like and trust you–and be more willing to take the next step with you.
BONUS TIP: Use LinkedIn Publishing (available in 2014 to many LinkedIn users) to exponentially increase your visibility since what you share can be seen by all LinkedIn members (not just your contacts or followers) and is searchable on LinkedIn and Google.
Make LinkedIn Work for You!
To make LinkedIn work for you, you’ll need to participate. You can’t just join and then forget about it. But as you consistently implement what I’ve shared here, you’ll be seen as an expert in your field and build your credibility… and both are key if you want to quickly go from being invisible to highly visible to LinkedIn.

Christine,
Good tips!
I have found that engaging in my groups is very effective.
But it means some work/time – giving thoughtful and helpful responses and asking questions that are relevant to the group and not just self-serving.

Thanks for your comment and feedback, Nancy. I agree that engaging in groups is very effective and I view it as a marketing investment with an amazing ROI!
Linked for Business says
Another way to become more visible on LinkedIn is to add a link to your profile in your email signature. With all the emails that I send in a week (and how often they get forwarded) I have the potential to connect with hundreds of new people.
